Synopsis
In 12th-century Japan, a provincial governor struggles to defend the rights of local farmers, colliding with the aims of the feudal regime and causing their exile and separation from their families. After years, his wife and children begin a dangerous journey to meet with him, but are captured by thieves who sell them as slaves. The mother ends up in an isolated brothel while the children fall into the hands of the corrupted officer Sansho. Eventually, the daughter plunges into apathy and the son hardens under the cruelty they experience. During a bold escape attempt to save a dying slave, the brothers elaborate a plan to free themselves from their evil oppressors.
